As part of PSN’s 4th District Market Intervention Project, the Southlawn United Methodist Church held a number of community activities to engage residents in problem solving activities and provide positive alternatives for young people. During Autumn Fest, residents from the South Chicago neighborhood attended a day filled with recreational and educational activities. Local leaders use the opportunity to spread an anti-violence message and encourage active participation in building community.
During this year’s annual B-ball on the block event held in the Little Village neighborhood, PSN sponsored a wheelchair team from the In my Shoes program. B-ball on the block allows programs like In my Shoes to communicate to local youth about the negative consequences of gun violence and gang membership. In addition to the basketball tournament, the event includes a barbeque, music and other events. By bringing local kids together, B-ball on the block creates a positive experience amongst youth from various neighborhoods in PSN’s target districts. Events like B-ball on the block illustrate our objective of facilitating individuals to come together to build a safer community.
